5 Great Sustainable Products for an Eco-Friendly Bathroom

In a quest for becoming a more sustainably conscious person in your day-to-day life, it’s important to consider every element where we can reduce or find more eco-friendly substitutes. One big consideration is in the home – there are many products on the market that are amazing substitutes to help reduce unnecessary waste.  

One area that often gets overlooked is the bathroom – a place where significant changes can be made to reduce waste. From switching over to a sustainable shampoo to using more sustainably made towels, there are plenty of things that can be swapped in the bathroom to help create an eco-friendlier space. 1. Bamboo Towels

One place where you can introduce an eco-friendlier option into the home is with your towels – from body to face towels, by switching to bamboo towels you’ll not only have the benefit of more absorbency, but also the peace of mind knowing that it’s the more sustainable choice. Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource that requires no pesticides to grow. When harvested, it continues to grow, reducing the need to replant. 2. Shampoo

According to Johnson & Johnson, 552 million shampoo bottles end up in US landfills every year – this is enough to fill 1,164 football fields. A way we can reduce this number is by switching to a more sustainable option – shampoo bars. These bars completely solve the issue by eliminating bottles altogether! There are many brands that carry shampoo bars, including Lush and Ethique. Lush has wonderful scents to choose from, and Ethique provides some great options for specific hair and scalp types, like itchy scalps, oily hair, curly hair, and more! 

3. Cleaner

If there’s one product you should have in your home, it’s baking soda. It’s a leading ingredient in most DIY natural shower cleaners because it’s a mild abrasive, has bleaching properties, deodorizes, fights stains, and helps to clean out drains well. Typical bathroom cleaners are harsh both for the planet and us, but baking soda offers a way to clean your shower naturally! Three great ways to use baking soda in the bathroom are:  

• Make a DIY baking soda-based scrub to clean your shower, shine faucets, clean tiles, and more!  
• Fight mold and mildew by combining baking soda with hydrogen peroxide and brush onto the mildew/moldy spots.  
• Use baking soda with vinegar to unclog shower drains. 

4. Sponge

Typical loofahs are made with plastics like nylon and polyurethane – two materials that are not good for our planet. They have been found to shed tiny bits of plastic, microplastics, every time they are used, ending up in waterways, as well as our landfills once thrown away. Not only do they pose a risk to our environment, but also to our health. Plastic loofahs tend to create bacteria buildup that may present a health hazard in the long run. So, what else can we use? There are many natural loofahs out there, one of our favourites is the all-natural, ultra-soft konjac sponge. 5. Razor

Razors are sometimes overlooked for their negative impacts on the environment, as many see them as a necessity, not as single-waste, and may not know of any alternatives. Razors cannot be recycled as they are sharp objects made from mixed materials. A standard disposable razor lasts for only 3-10 shaves before it is blunt, then it is tossed to the landfills. Not only are the razors themselves not good for the environment, but also the packaging as they are typically packaged in single-use plastics.
