5 Natural Ways to Stay Healthy During Flu Season
Posted on 22 February 2016
With the changing weather, it's easy to catch a bug. Here are our tried-and-true tips to combat nasty colds and the flu this season.
1. Make a Tent
No, it's not what you think! No need to camp out in this cold weather. When you're boiling water for tea, pour some of it into a bowl and place your nose in front of it. Drape a towel and make a little tent over your head and the bowl of water. And voila! You have your own mini humidifier! With the heat on high, humidity is at an all time low around the house. This can lead to dried out sinuses, which can then lead to more bacterial and viral infections. By keeping your sinuses moisturized, it can open up your airways and fight against colds before they happen.
There are many ways to stay active even if you stay indoors. Some ideas to move your body, that are fun too are:
- Walk in an indoor mall with a friend
- Do housechores like mopping, sweeping while listening to your favourite music
- Watch an exercise video! (Rent or subscribe to free exercise programs like on livestrong.com)
- Join a group sport with your friends (badminton, basketball, soccer, volleyball) - it's fun and you'll forget about counting calories
I always have my thermos of tea with me. When I feel a cold coming on, I put in a medicinal tea bag with herbs like Echinacea, Ginger Root, Elderberry, Licorice Root - which have natural flu and cold-fighting powers. Many of them are available at your health food store or if you shop online - Well.ca and Terra20.
4.Eat Oysters & Garlic
This is not a weird one. Oysters are known for their high zinc content - which taken by itself or as a supplement, can shorten the duration of cold symptoms in adults. A compound found in garlic called allicin, produces antioxidants when the garlic is cooked. A Canadian study revealed that adults who took garlic supplements between November and February had fewer colds than those who took a placebo. Just another reason to make yourself some yummy garlic bread!
5. Wash your Hands & Your Phone
The first one is obvious - but the second one we tend to forget. Washing your hands help stop germs in their tracks. But also everything you touch needs a good wipe too - yep, your Ipad, your phone, and the faucet you washed your hands under! Just keep some sanitizing wipes near your sink or your charging station and before you retire for the night, give it a quick wipe so they are ready in the morning.
